In September 2024, Budapest experienced significant flooding as the Danube River overflowed due to heavy rainfall. This disrupted daily life, causing damage to homes, transport delays, and the temporary suspension of tram services, particularly on tram line 2, which runs along the riverbank. The route, famous for its scenic views, was directly affected by the floodwaters, but services have since resumed, allowing locals and tourists to once again enjoy the iconic tram line.
While the flood brought challenges, it also became something of a unique attraction. People flocked to the riverbanks to witness the high waters, with some even daring to wade into the flooded areas. Groups could be seen relaxing nearby, enjoying snacks and drinks, turning the event into a social gathering of sorts
Thanks to the city's robust flood defences, especially after in 2006 and 2013 floods, the city recovered quickly. Most areas were back to normal within 3-4 days, with only minor disruptions such as the lighting around the Parliament building still awaiting repair.
